Wrapped Rock (L)
For your peacefulness and tranquility.
Hold it in your hands to feel the moment of calm and serenity.
Mother and daughter duo Shizu Okino and Karen Okino Butzbach combine found stones with ornamental knots used in Japanese ikebana basketry. Each stone is individually selected for shape, color and pattern. Then, each rattan or cane knot is selected to complement the size and shape of the stone. The result is a fanciful, decorative piece that projects a sense of peacefulness and tranquility and invites quiet contemplation.

Shizu Design
Shizu Design comprise a mother-daughter duo of Karen Okino Butzbach and Shizu Okino. Shizu was introduced to baskets and basket-making some 30 years ago through a basket maker, Kazuko Iwata from Japan, who specialized in traditional Japanese basketry. She studied with Kazuko where she was introduced to Japanese basketry but in 2021 she conceived the notion of combining basketry with mundane "rock" by wrapping the rocks with decorative ties with ratthan, like those used on Japanese ikebana baskets.
Shizu Design's construction technique involves many steps, including their "han" or signature, which is hand-stamped on rice paper and placed on the back of every piece. Each stone represents hours of work, and should last a very long time if handled with care.
Each rocks is mostly from the California and Oregon coast, though some have been gathered on trips to other states. Each rocks are selected for their unique shape, color, and features. Each weave is contemplated and thought carefully to adjust and form on to each rock, representing the way us humans adjust to our mother nature.
