These candles are ethically made one by one, by artisans in Shiga prefecture, in a traditional method that had been sustained for 4 family generations.  

 

The materials used are all-natural, burning stably and beautifully without dripping excess wax. This type of candle does not emit smoke while burning, thus sustaining the air environment clean and pure. By using sustainable resources, these environmentally friendly candles are crafted utilizing local and 100% natural plant wax (rice bran).

Hand cratfed by artisans in the Takashima county of Shiga prefecture in 1914. The artisanship has been passed down for 4 generations, polished, and refined as time passes.  These candles use Japan's main food source - rice, by extracting a small amount of rice bran wax during the filtration process of rice bran oil.

 

Originally creating candles to be used on shrines, it is only recent years the family started to create candles for other (or all) occassions using the same traditional method of "Tegake"; an unique method of applying and dripping wax over the wick with barre hands, over and over.  It is said to take 10 years to perfect this Tegake, and this method had already been carried out in the last 100+ years within the family. 

 

These traditional candles use 100% vegetable wax from rice bran sourced from Kyushu farmers.
